The visionary behind Leica
Leica’s history began in 1869 at the Wetzlar Optical Institute, led by Ernst Leitz, specializing in optical systems and microscopes.
Oskar Barnack, an engineer at the company, envisioned a portable camera to overcome the limitations of bulky traditional models. Between 1913 and 1914, he created the Leica Ur, a 24x36mm format prototype that revolutionized photography and laid the foundation for modern photojournalism.

“Ur Leica”: The beginning of the Leica story
In 1913-1914, the Leica Ur, often referred to as the “primitive” Leica, marked a groundbreaking moment in the history of Leica. This small, portable, and discreet camera used 35mm film, aligning perfectly with the core values of Leica: innovation, practicality, and creativity.
By liberating photographers from the constraints of heavy plate cameras, Leica allowed them to become truly mobile and immersed in the flow of action. Additionally, the 35mm film enabled photographers to enlarge their images freely, offering unparalleled control over print sizes.

The evolution of Leica cameras
Barnack’s first Leica camera remained a prototype until 1925, when it was launched as the Leica I with a fixed lens. This milestone marked the beginning of the Leica story, driven by values of innovation, precision, and timeless design.
The 1930s and 1940s were key in the history of Leica, with the 1932 release of the Leica III introducing a rangefinder system for sharper, more precise shots. Despite challenges during World War II, Leica continued to innovate, leading to the iconic Leica M3 in 1954, a model that redefined the rangefinder camera and became a symbol of photographic excellence.
