Test AD600 Pro II: The new professional flash from Godox

minutes to read

Godox flash units, thanks to their affordable price, have always offered an excellent entry point for photographers wanting to get started with remote flash. With the arrival of the AD600 Pro II, this remains unchanged.

Godox presents its long-awaited new flash torch, the AD600 Pro II. Successor to the AD300 Pro and AD600 Pro, this new flash takes the features of the previous Godox flashlamp models and improves them (even more) with new features.

The new AD600 Pro II flash features a two-tone LED modelling lamp, adjustable from 2800K to 6000K, an all-new wireless synchronization system, and a simple, streamlined new interface with an LCD screen. But what makes the AD600 Pro II competitive, like most Godox lighting equipment, is above all its price.

Discover in this article a full review and all the features of the new AD600 Pro II from Godox.

1. Flash power and duration

Like its predecessor, the AD600 Pro, the all-new Godox AD600 Pro II flash has a power output of 600 Ws.

Flash duration varies from 1/220 s at minimum power to 1/12 340 s at maximum power. The flash power setting is more precise than that of the previous model, ranging from 1/512 to 1/1.

Godox has added a new “Freeze” mode to the AD600 Pro II, enabling extremely fast-moving moments to be photographed, thanks to a flash duration of 1/20 400 s.

Recycling time is quite short, at 0.01 s at minimum power and 0.9 s at maximum power.

The new AD600 Pro II flash is equipped with a fan to help dissipate heat. A negative point is the noise caused by this fan, which activates very quickly when the flash is in use.

2. Modeling lamp

The AD600 Pro II incorporates a 40 Ws bi-color continuous light, compared with a 38 Ws modelling lamp for the previous AD600 Pro model.

The LED lamp temperature can be adjusted from 2800K to 6000K.

This continuous light function on the AD600 Pro II will appeal to photographers, for uncluttering shadows or enhancing photos taken in low light, as well as to videographers.

3. New: Wireless sync mode

The flash is TTL compatible with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras, with high-speed sync. With a range of 100m and a flash output of 600Ws.

The new Godox AD600 Pro II flashlight offers a new synchronization system. Until now, on older models of Godox AD Pro flashlights, you had to manually set the flash and the wireless transmitter to the same channel, which could be problematic in the presence of other photographers or numerous wireless systems. With this new wireless synchronization system (2.4 GHz), you only need to pair the transmitter with the flash once, and no longer need to touch it afterwards.

The only slight drawback: to take advantage of this feature, you’ll need to use the Godox X3 transmitter specifically.

4. Battery or mains-powered flash

The AD600 Pro II flash is battery-powered (2600 mAh), ideal for outdoor shooting. But it is now also possible to remove the battery and replace it with an AC26 mains adapter.

By plugging into the mains, the AD600 Pro II obtains continuous and more stable power, ideal for long indoor shoots with access to an outlet. A significant improvement for studio photographers.

5. Design and interface of the AD600 Pro II

In addition to its technical innovations, Godox has given the AD600 Pro II a new look. The design is a little lighter and more premium, perhaps to appeal to professional photographers.

The AD600 Pro II measures around 33 cm x 20 cm x 12.5 cm, weighing in at 3.5 kg. It’s a fairly small and compact flash, making it easy to carry and handle.

A major improvement is the replacement of the black-and-white screen by a new color LCD, offering a more intuitive and efficient user experience. With the new screen and fewer buttons than its predecessor, it’s easy to navigate menus and change parameters such as operating modes, modeling light settings and connection options.

Godox has also added a new colored LED indicator, positioned on the back of the flash. These two small pilot lights indicate which group the flash belongs to. If it belongs to group A, the two LED lights will be red; if it belongs to group F, they will turn yellow.

6. Combining the AD600 Pro II with the BFP projection attachment and other accessories

The AD600 Pro II can be combined with a wide range of accessories and light modifiers such as reflectors, softboxes, snoots and optical projectors.

Among others, you can achieve many creative results with the BFP projection attachment.

Designed to project sharp, focused beams of light, it enables you to create complex lighting effects, such as shapes, patterns or textures, through the use of gobos.

The BFP projection attachment is equipped with four integrated aperture blades that help shape the light. You can easily adjust the blades to create the patterns you want. The handles move around, allowing you to create precise shapes such as triangles, squares and more, according to your creative needs.

In addition to the standard 85 mm lens supplied with the projection attachment, three additional lenses of 48 mm, 65 mm and 150 mm can be purchased separately.

This BFP projection attachment is very practical for portrait, fashion or advertising shoots, where you need to shape the light precisely to properly highlight your subjects.
