XF 16-55mm F/2.8 R LM WR II: Fujifilm’s new standard lens

minutes to read

At X-Summit in Tokyo, Fujifilm announced two new lenses in its X range: the XF16-55mm II and the XF500mm telephoto lens.

The XF16-55mm II is a second-generation zoom lens that succeeds the XF16-55mm that Fujifilm recently discontinued. This new lens retains the constant f/2.8 aperture of its predecessor, but has been redesigned to offer a reworked optical formula and a smaller footprint.

The XF16-55 II has been designed to accompany Fujifilm’s flagship hybrid X cameras for professionals: the X-H2, X-H2S and X-T5.

A completely revised optical formula

The optics of the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm F/2.8 R LM WR II are based on 16 elements in 11 groups, with 4 aspherical lenses, 3 ED lenses and one super ED element.

An additional ED element has been added compared to the previous model (17 lenses in 12 groups (3 aspherical, 3 ED)) to improve edge sharpness and minimize chromatic aberration.

This new formula has been achieved while increasing the lens resolution, so that it can adapt to the 40 MP sensors found in X-T5 and X-H2 bodies. In addition, the size of the lens has been significantly reduced to make it lighter and easier to transport.

Whatever the choice of focal length, the maximum aperture is F/2.8, enabling good low-light performance. The 11-blade diaphragm should create a smooth, pronounced bokeh, and the new lens also boasts improved close-up performance over its predecessor.

The new lens also boasts improved close-up performance over its predecessor. The XF 16-55 mm F/2.8 II offers a maximum magnification of 0.2x (0.3x equivalent), compared with 0.16x (0.24x) for the previous model, thanks to a minimum focusing distance of 30 cm.

Lens autofocus and stabilization

Lens autofocus is provided by a new-generation LM motor, offering ultra-fast, precise focusing. In addition to this improvement, the motor uses a glass that is lighter and smaller to move, which is a plus.

In short, autofocus is now faster, smoother and quieter, which Fujifilm claims makes this improved lens particularly suitable for action photography and video recording.

Optical stabilization is still absent. The lens will therefore rely on the IBIS of the Fujifilm mirrorless cameras with which it will be paired.

Design and handling

The Fujifilm XF16-55mm F/2.8 R LM WR II differs from its predecessor mainly in its handling. The new lens takes up considerably less space. It measures 9.5 cm in length and has a diameter of 7.83 cm, weighing just 410g.

Fujifilm says it has redesigned the layout and size of the lenses to create a more compact and lightweight lens. Compared with the previous version, the overall dimensions have been reduced by 37.8% and the weight by 37.4%.

The lens is weather-resistant (hence the WR: Weather Resistant). The XF16-55 II can withstand dust, weather and cold thanks to 12 seals.

A lens for videographers too

Another difference with the old XF16-55mm model is the presence of a switch on the lens, enabling the aperture ring to be “unclicked” for fluid aperture adjustment when shooting video. It offers smooth, almost silent exposure control, with no clicks or vibrations.

Price and availability

The new XF16-55mm II will be available from November 31st at a price of €1,349. Order now on 50.8 Shop.
